New MIL-STD-461G
On December 11, 2015 the Department of Defense released a
new MIL-STD-461G.
The revised standard includes two additional susceptibility
requirements. CS117 for lightning-induced transients on cables and
power leads, and CS118 for personnel-borne electrostatic discharge.
CS106 (conducted susceptibility, transients, power leads) had been
deleted, presumably replaced by CS117. In addition, technical updates
have been added to RE102 (Radiated Emission, Electric Fields) and RS103
(Radiated Susceptibility, Electric Fields).
A copy of the standard (dated 12/11/15) is available at http://quicksearch.dla.mil/Transient/39694326ABA3451E9EA9335D190480B1.pdf

Ferrite Cores for Low-Frequency EMI Cable Suppression
It is common to use ferrite cores on cables to reduce high-frequency
(> 10 MHz) emissions and/or susceptibility. For low-frequency (<
10 MHz) emission/susceptibility problems, however, ferrite cores have
not been very useful, since their impedance is too low to be effective
at these frequencies.
Recently Fair-Rite Products Corp. has introduced a new low-frequency
Type 75 ferrite material optimized for EMI suppression in the 200 kHz
to 30 MHz frequency range. These ferrite cores have an impedance peak
in the 1 to 2 MHz range. For more information on these low-frequency
suppression cores see my recent blog or download Fair-Rite’s Low-frequency Suppression Flyer.

EMC Icon Passes Away
On June 27, 2012 Dr. Clayton R. Paul passed away. This is a great loss,
he will be sorely missed by the many of us who knew him. Read my Tribute to Clayton.

EMC Book Receives Scholarly Publishing Award
From: Interference Technology eNews, March 4, 2010
“Electromagnetic
Compatibility Engineering,” written by Henry Ott and published by
John Wiley & Sons Inc., received a PROSE Award for 2009 in the
subject of Engineering & Technology. The PROSE Awards annually
recognize the best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing
attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in
over 40 categories. The awards have been judged by peer publishers,
librarians, and medical professionals since 1976.

New
EMC Directive (2004/108/EC)
A new updated version of the fifteen year old EMC Directive
(89/336/EEC) was published in the Official Journal of
the European Communities on December 31, 2004 as Directive 2004/108/EC. The new
directives protection requirements remain essentially the same,
however, most other aspects of the
directive have been completely rewritten. See EMC Regulations for more information.
Revised
EMC Directive Standards List
An
updated
list of harmonized standards under the new EMC directive
2004/108/EC (previously 89/336/EMC)
along with their effective dates was published in the Official
Journal
the European Communities (OJ) on October 23 2012.
The
list replaces all previous lists published in the OJ.
